Minutes of the March 9 IAAC meeting 1. The meeting came to order at 10:30 a.m. Members attending were Academic Advisor for Athletics Greg Augspurger; Athletic Director Steve Kirkham; Faculty representatives Jacqueline Berning, Travis Peterson, and Charlie Shub; Staff Representatives Glenn Steimling and Susan Szpyrka; and Student Athlete Advisory Committee representative James Bjorklund. 2. Director Kirkham requested a minor change in the minutes. On motion by Jacqueline Berning and second by Travis Peterson, the minutes of the February 9 meeting as corrected were approved by voice vote with no dissent. 3. Coach Stratton was attending the state high school basketball tournament for recruiting purposes and will give her season wrapup next month. Director Kirkham reported for the men's basketball team. He noted there had been a coaching change in mid-season. He took over on an interim basis, and then RMAC Hall of Fame member and former coach and athletics director Doug Schakel from Mesa State took over on an interim basis. Under the new leadership, the team won 4 games in January and February and ended their home season with a thrilling double overtine victory over Fort Lewis. Schakel was unwilling to continue on as permanent coach for personal reasons. A search was convened and is in the final stages. Three important factors in the search included a. how the candidate handled working with young men, including demeanor, coaching style, commitment to building the program, and academics; b. the candidates work ethic, particularly as it relates to the work demands and funding issues here, across the RMAC, and across NCAA Division II; and c. having a Colorado connection for recruiting. The core of the team will be returning. Adapting so rapidly to the coaching changes and winning some games so soon after the changes demonstrates the team has far more talent than the record shows. 4. Director Kirkham gave his report: a. Kirkham reported that he, Vice Chancellor Burnett, and Martin Wood had met with six national governing bodies. They are all interested in facilities near the UCCS proposed facilities. Current plans call for an arena, a stadium, and offices for the national governing bodies running from west to east at the north edge of the property along Nevada avenue. Moreover, USA Track and Field will be looking at new facilities as their current facility in the RCA dome in Indianapolis will become unavailable. The near UCCS site is apparently under serious consideration. This is all still in the discussion stage, but there is true interest. b. Upgrades are in progress at the soccer field at 4- diamonds. Lights are in place. UCCS will partner with CSCS to install an artificial surface. Once completed, the facilities would generally be available for UCCS intramurals during the week and competition during the weekends. The facility could be rented to local soccer clubs during the summer. There could also be an opportunity to receive some bleachers from the Air Force Academy. c. Kirkham reported athletics had been given permission by Student government to place a modest student fee increase ($1.50 per credit hour) on the ballot this spring. 5. Shub gave the FAR report a. New forms for the fifth year scholarship application from both the NCAA and the RMAC are available. The deadlines for both are at the beginning of April. b. Shub reported that his sabbatical plans for next year include, if he is selected for the FAR Fellow program, developing programs to further improve the effectiveness of RMAC FARs and presenting those programs at conference schools. c. Shub also reported he will be attending RMAC meetings in April and solicited agenda items. 6. Bjorklund gave the SAAC report a. The recent food drive netted almost 500 pounds of food. b. Dr. Seuss Day, a project involving reading to elementary students involved 12 to 15 student athletes. SAAC hopes this will become an annual event. c. Student athletes have received permission to visit children and the elderly at memorial hospital on April 7. d. The lead in the race for the first annual steel and silver trophy is at 17 - 10. e. The annual spring awards celebration is scheduled for after the softball match against Fort Lewis College on Sunday, April 30. 7. New business Travis Peterson reported that the track team was participating in VO2max testing with Beth-El. The committee discussed vehicles for encouraging faculty/staff attendance at athletics events. Suggestions included having teams invite faculty/staff members as a guest coach, allowing student athletes to address a faculty or staff council meeting, holding a faculty/staff appreciation day with some form of giveaway. Athletes 8. The committee went in to executive session to consider eligibility waivers. The committee reported out of executive session that since neither the student athlete under consideration nor his coach was in attendance, no action was recommended. 9. At 11:45 the meeting was adjourned.
