Draft Minutes of the October 7 IAAC meeting 1. The meeting came to order at 10:30 a.m. Members attending were Athletic Director Steve Kirkham; Faculty representative Charlie Shub; Academic Coordinator Robert King; Executive Director of Student Support and Judicial Affairs Steve Lin- hart; Financial Aid representative Jennifer Fisher; SAAC rep- resentative Jason Shaver; Staff Representatives Mark Janssen and Gudrun McCollum; and UBAC representative Al Schoffstall. 2. On a motion by Schoffstall seconded by Linhart, the minutes of the September 2 meeting were approved without dissent. 3. Kirkham gave the Athletics Director Report. a. Kirkham passed out two fundraising pamphlets prepared with the help of the CU foundation. He noted that the fundraising support from the foundation is a great boon to the program. He described the impact of the founda- tion support as being a momentum builder and a game changer. b. The silent auction will be held on Sunday, October 11. Last year, this event raised over $12,000 in scholar- ships. He noted that Mrs. Heather Wood, mother of the former volleyball coach and current associate director of athletics for compliance, Jessica Wood, had done a wonderful job in helping to secure items to be auc- tioned. c. The golf tournament will be Monday, October 12, at the Colorado Springs Country Club. The date is Columbus day, so greater participation from the community is antici- pated. Kirkham observed that John Day had done an excel- lent job of increasing the size of the tournament. Not only is the participation significantly higher than last year, but the level of sponsorship has also risen. d. This weekend will be busy, what with three volleyball matches, a soccer match, the silent auction and the golf tournament. e. Kirkham noted that the teams are doing well. Despite losing at Fort Lewis, the men's soccer team became the first RMAC team to score against that team in conference competition. f. The event center is progressing nicely. The first events will be on January 8 with the basketball teams hosting Adams State. The grand opening ceremonies will be on January 22 with the basketball teams hosting Regis. g. Kirkham reported the hiring of Keith Barnett as volley- ball coach. Barnett was a member of the U.S. National Team from 2001-02 and also 2005-06. A second-team all- American in 2001 at Pepperdine, Barnett went on to earn a gold medal to the World University Games in Beijing, China later that year. He actually received his degree in Geography from UCCS after his playing career con- cluded. That playing career not only encompassed his time at Pepperdine and with the U.S. National Team. He also played professionally in Halen, Belgium, for three seasons as well as one each in Spain and Romania. The event manager position is currently being filled by an intern. h. On the budget front, Kirkham noted that while the department had budgeted for an increase of 2% from stu- dent fee revenue, the actual increase was closer to 6%. Also, with the decrease in gasoline prices, the trans- portation bids came in a bit lower than expected. Sav- ings and revenue have been used for one time operational expenses and to pay down the debt on Mountain Lion Sta- dium. i. Kirkham reported that there will be an article in a future Scribe. Money given as athletics scholarships does not pay the full cost of attendance, so the net revenue from a student athlete is positive. Athletics scholarships normally go to students who would not come to UCCS without the athletics support. As such the dol- lars given as scholarships are well spent because the net revenue is positive. j. In response to a question, Kirkham reported that athlet- ics is viewed as an auxiliary enterprise. He noted that there had been a deficit when he arrived and reported that he had managed to pay off a portion of that deficit. He noted that the travel budgets are good and that staff salaries were sill low when compared with the rest of the conference. 4. Shub gave the FAR Report. a. Shub noted that the volleyball team traveled with the men's soccer team to the western slope for weekend matches in Grand Junction and Durango. Positive aspects of this trip included a transportation savings of around 3000 dollars, the volleyball team having UCCS students cheering them on at their away games, the soccer team having UCCS, students cheering them on at their away games, and opportunities to learn more about the members of the other team. The positive aspect of having the volleyball team return on Sunday instead of late Satur- day was the scenery, although some of the players did not like not having all day Sunday in Colorado springs to prepare for Monday classes. b. Shub reported that a Woman's Soccer player was injured seriously enough to require emergency surgery and that he sent e-mails to the student's professors concerning the absence. The player reports the professors have been extremely cooperative in helping her make up the missed work. 5. Jason Shaver gave the SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Commit- tee) report. a. In order to save money, the RMAC SAAC held their fall meeting with a conference call instead of a face to face meeting. At the RMAC level, SAAC is concerned with pro- moting a positive game environment, and surpassing last year's $6500 contribution to the Make-a-wish foundation. b. The halloween BOO-zar event will be held on October 28. They hope attendance will surpass the 300 children who attended last year , and that they will be able to raise more than last year's contribution to the Make-a-wish foundation. Last year, they ran out of candy, so this year, each team will donate candy. c. The pen pals program with local elementary schools will be expanded to involve each of the teams, not merely each of the SAAC representatives. 6. New Business: Jen Fisher expressed concern that the SIS replacement project might not be going far enough in automat- ing the data entry for financial aid. Concerns include that UCCS simply does not have the resources to support manual data entry, the tack that is being taken at Boulder. There seems to be a feeling by the system wide project team that if Boulder doesn't need it, it is unnecessary. Shub noted that he had raised the issue of automating data transfer between University records systems and the NCAA com- pliance assistant software with the NCAA. He reported that while the NCAA leadership seemed supportive of the idea, the IT people at the NCAA seemed not to have a good understanding of the problems and issues. Shub volunteered to again raise the issue at both the RMAC and FAR Association levels. Further discussions will be going on with SIS project people on campus and There is hope that some business processes can be streamlined to allow athletics personnel to update SIS data instead of merely requesting it be updated. 7. At 11:30, the meeting was adjourned.
