Bhupen Choudhury dies in Indian Army custody, Khairabari, Assam, Sep
'97
Bhupen Choudhury from his Hotel suspecting to be linked with NDFB (National
Democratic Front of Bodoland, an armed opposition group active in lower part
of Assam) and took him to the army camp at Khairabari. One Mr. Krishna Kanta
Sarma was also picked up by Army from the Bhergaon weekly market
with Mr. Bhupen Choudhury. In the Army camp 67 years old Mr.Bhupen Choudury
was brutally tortured and he died in the Army camp on 14 Sept '97 due to in
human torture. On 14 September at arround 9-30 P.M. Army handed over his dead
body to the Khairabari Police. The Khairabari Police carry his deadbody to then
earest Hospital, where Doctor confirmed his death.
FOLLOW UP
the Army said that Mr. Bhupen Choudhury died due to heart attack, when he was
taken in the Army custody to show some hideouts of the millitants. But the
eye witnessand local people confirmed that the hole body of the victim
was full of puncture marks. Local people and various organisation including
MASS, ASSU demanded a Judicial enquiry of the incident. The District
Administration of Darrang ordered a Magisterial enquiry and did a VEDEO recording
of the Postmortem and send the incident to the National Human Rights
Commission, New Delhi.
