of Assam contains names of a large number of foreigners and
'non-citizens' and the EC has started an intensive revision of the
list to detect and delete these names.

Talking to newsmen on February 15 at Guwahati, Mr Krishnamurthy said
that infiltration was a serious problem for the State and he held
discussion with Governor, the chief electoral officer and other
senior officials of the State on the ongoing intensive poll revision.
He said that the EC would publish the list only after being totally
satisfied. He said that areas where large number of migrants had
settled were being identified during the ongoing revision of
electoral rolls and strict measures were being taken in those areas
during the revision process. The EC said that the decisions of the
Supreme Court on February 6, 1995 and the Gauhati High Court on
January 26, 1994, were being taken into consideration by the EC to
draw guidelines for the procedure to determine citizenship, besides
also keeping in mind the views of student organizations and political
   parties.

armed Naga miscreants snatched about Rs.8,000 and two watches from a
business man of Mugoikan village from the Jorhat district segment of

o TOURIST INFLOW ON THE DECLINE [AT:17-FEB-97]
   -----------------------------

The recent spate of violence which rocked the state especially the
Bodo heartland drastically reduced the inflow of tourists to the
State during the last couple of months. According to sources in the
State Tourism Department, a fear psychosis had gripped the domestic
tourists, who had a plan to visit the State, in the wake of the
unprecedented blast in Brahmaputra Mail on December 30, 1995 and
other incidents of blowing up of bridges as well as killings in the
Bodoland dominated areas. This can be very well testified by large
number of last minute cancellation with the tour operators during the
   month of January, 1997.
