1  ARMY RECOVERS ISI OPERATIVE'S DIARY FROM TAMULPUR	[S:10-APR-97]
   -------------------------------------------------
   
   The Army has recovered a diary  belonging  to  an  operative  of  the
   Pakistan's  Inter-Services  Intelligence  (ISI), one Rasool, from the
   possession of two persons in a search  operation  at  an  undisclosed
   location  south  of  Tamulpur  carried  out  on the night of April 8.
   High-ranking officials from the 4 Corps Headquarters at  Tezpur  said
   the  diary  contained  volatile information and outlined an elaborate
   plan to carry out an  attack  on  the  107  Brigade  Headquarters  at
   Tamulpur  The diary also contained detail sketch map of the layout of
   Brigade headquarters.
   
   Entries in the diary includes meeting of Rasool  with  ULFA  supremo,
   Paresh  Baruah,  Anup  Chetia, Mitinga Daimari and Mintu at Tezpur in
   February this year and collection of an advance  of  Rs.1400,000  for
   the  assassination of either a colonel, a brigadier or a general on a
   'contract' of Rs.4 million.  An entry in the diary  dated  March  16,
   1997 --  the  day  on  which  Col.  Karla was gunned down in a Ganesh
   mandir at Tezpur -- said 'action in Tezpur completed ...  and payment
   received at Mangaldai on March 18, 1997.'
   

2  KAMAL KUMARI AWARDS PRESENTED			[S:11-APR-97]

   The  Kamal  Kumari  National  Awards  for  Culture  and  Science  and
   Technology  for  the  years  1994  and  1995  were  given away by the
   Governor of Assam, Lok Nath Misra at a glittering  function  held  at
   the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre in Guwahati on April 10.
   
   While the recipients of the culture awards for  the  two  years  were
   Prof.Sisir   Kumar   Das  and  Dr.Indira  Goswami,  the  science  and
   technology award winners were Prof.Dilip Kumar Choudhury,  physicist,
   and  Dr.T.S.R.Prasada  Rao,  Director  of  the  Indian  Institute  of
   Petroleum, Dehradun.

3  ROUF NOT FOREIGNER:CM				[S:9-APR-97]
   ---------------------
  
   The  Assam Chief Minister, Mr Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, scoffed reports
   that one of his Cabinet colleagues was a foreign National.   'Through
   inquiry  has  been  done  and  the  reports  were found to be totally
   baseless, unfounded and politically motivated,' Mr Mahanta said.

4  DR BIKASH BARUAH GRILLED				[S:11-APR-97]
   ------------------------
  
   Jorhat  police  interrogated Dr.Bikash Baruah, famous satirist as his
   name appeared in the documents in the bag that  reportedly  fell  off
   from  the  feeling ULFA militants on April 8 in Naoholla village near
   Jorhat. Significantly Dr.Baruah is  at  present  editing  a  magazine
   'Dhumuha'  which  police  sources  claim  is  funded  by the ULFA and
   focuses on revolutionary and secessionist themes mainly.
