1  POLICEMEN SUSPENDED FOR SECURITY LAPSES		[S+AT:11-JUN-97]

   As  a fallout of the security lapse leading to the bomb attack on the
   Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta by suspected ULFA militants  on
   June  8,  the  Government  of  Assam on June 10 suspended four police
   officers including the Guwahati City SP, Mr Kuladhar Saikia while the
   DIG  of  the  Central  Western  Range,  Dilip  Kumar  Bora  has  been
   transferred.  Others  placed  under  suspension  are:   Additional SP
   (DSB) Abani Kumar Sarma,  the  DSP,  Pandu  Division  Partha  Sarathi
   Mahanta,  the  officer-in-charge  of Jalukbari police station Dibakar
   Sarma.
   

2  POLITICAL PARTIES CALL 10-HOUR ASSAM BANDH 	         [AT:11-JUN-97]
   ------------------------------------------
   
   Six  political  parties of the State, AGP, CPI, CPM, BJP, PDF and the
   UPPA, have jointly given a call for a 10-hour Assam bandh from  6  am
   on  June  13  in protest against the attempt on the life of the Chief
   Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and in the interest of bringing peace
   and development of the State. This decision was taken in a  all-party
   meet  organised  by  the AGP at the Circuit House in Guwahati on June
   10. Though five other parties, CPI(ML), SUCI,  UMF,  RCPI  and  URMCA
   also   participated   in  the  meeting,  they  have  expressed  their
   reservations on the issue of  giving  a  bandh  call  and  thus  they
   refrained from giving the call.
   
   The members of all the eleven political  parties,  however,  strongly
   condemned  the  bomb  attack on the Chief Minister at a time when the
   Chief Minister was holding dialogues with cross-section of the people
   for bringing permanent solution to the  problems  of  the  State  and
   observed that  the  attack on the CM was an attack on democracy.  The
   meeting decided to hold mass rallies against insurgency and terrorism
   in Guwahati and in all the district and  sub-divisional  headquarters
   of the  State to mobilise the masses against terrorism.  The dates of
   the mass rallies will be fixed after the bandh.
   

3  TALKS MAY BE HELD IN FOREIGN COUNTRY: CM	         [UNI:9-JUN-97]
   ----------------------------------------
   
   The  Assam  Chief  Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta on June 9 accepted
   the banned ULFA's condition for starting negotiations  in  a  foreign
   country.   In  an official statement, while calling the ultras to the
   negotiation table, the Chief Minister  categorically  said  that  the
   State Government  had  no opposition to ULFA's condition.  Mr Mahanta
   expressed hope that the militants would respect the will and wish  of
   the  common  people  to  participate  in  the  negotiation to end the
   problem.
   

4  JAILBREAK ATTEMPT AT DIPHU:  ONE SHOT DEAD	         [S:11-JUN-97]
   -------------------------------------------
   
   One extremist detenu was killed and 34 other extremist  detenues  and
   seven policemen were injured in Diphu district jail on the morning of
   June  10,  where  358  detenues,  all belonging to various extremists
   groups like ULFA, NSCN, Dima Halam Daoga etc., made an  abortive  bid
   to  flee the jail by hijacking a water tanker that came to supply the
   daily drinking water to the jail.
   

5  ULFA WARNS INTELLECTUALS OF ASSAM		         [S:11-JUN-97]
   ---------------------------------
   
   The ULFA on June 10 warned a 'section of the intellectuals of  Assam'
   for  adopting  double  standards  in  the matter of well-being of the
   exploited people on the one hand,  and  supporting  an  'exploitative
   regime' on  the  other.    In  a  statement  to the press, the ULFA's
   publicity secretary, Mithinga Daimari  said  that  it  had  become  a
   common  phenomenon  nowadays  for  the  intellectuals to 'sell' their
   intellect, knowledge and wisdom at 'cheap prices' at the  service  of
   the  'exploiter  class'  and called upon the 'real intellectuals' who
   stood  for  the  exploited  people  unwaveringly,  to  take  on   the
   responsibility  of constructive criticism and guiding the struggle of
   the ULFA.
   

6  ULFA LEADERS SPOTTED IN EUROPE			[S:10-JUN-97]
   ------------------------------
   
   If the reports pouring in from Europe and other  adjoining  countries
   were  even  partially  true,  the  general secretary of the ULFA Anup
   Chetia and the foreign secretary of the outfit Sasadhar Choudhury had
   been spotted by Indian  agents  in  Paris  and  elsewhere  contacting
   aircraft  manufacturers  during  May  13, 14 and even thereafter this
   year sources said in Shillong.  It was sometimes in the first week of
   April this year that the two leaders presented their  resolutions  to
   the  United  Nations  Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR) pressing for
   international recognition of the outfit's secessionist demands.
   

7  FINER VISIT 'A GOOD BEGINNING':  SHEIKH HASINA	[AT:11-JUN-97]

   Bangladesh Prime  Minister  Sheikh  Hasina  on  June  10  called  for
   exploitation of the available infrastructure and opportunities in her
   country and the North-eastern region of India for the general good of
   the people  on  both  sides.   Sheikh Hasina told a delegation of the
   Federation of Industries of North Eastern Region (FINER)  led  by  Mr
   H.S.Kumbhatt  that as neighbours, both sides should take advantage of
   the opportunities.  She informed the delegation that  the  matter  of
   opening a visa office in Guwahati would be examined.
   
   FINER  called for setting up of projects where part of value addition
   in NE region and partly in Bangladesh so that both sides can  develop
   together.   The  delegation impressed upon the Prime Minister that NE
   region is less developed than  Bangladesh  and  would  like  to  have
   investment from  their  country  in  the  NE.   FINER urged the PM to
   consider direct flight between Dhaka and Guwahati.
   

8  TARUN GOGOI ELECTED APCC CHIEF			[AT:11-JUN-97]
   ------------------------------
   
   Former  Union Minister Tarun Gogoi was elected president of the Assam
   Pradesh Congress Committee(I),  while  former  Assam  Chief  Minister
   Bhumidhar Barman was elected the vice-president in the elections held
   for  the  posts  at  State  Congress(I) headquarters, Rajiv Bhawan in
   Guwahati on June 10.

9  SONADHAR DAS ELECTED MAYOR OF GUWAHATI		[AT:10-JUN-97]
   --------------------------------------
   
   Mr  Sonadhar  Das  of  the  AGP was elected the new Mayor of Guwahati
   city, while his party colleague Mr Surendra Kumar Patra, was  elected
   deputy  Mayor  in  the  Mayoral  election  of  the Guwahati Municipal
   Corporation held on June 9 at the Circuit House in Guwahati. The  new
   Mayor will take charge on June 16.
   

10 RRL SCIENTIST HONOURED BY AMERICAN INSTITUTE	         [AT:11-JUN-97]
   --------------------------------------------
   
   The American Biographical Institute (ABI), North  Carolina,  USA  has
   conferred  the  honour  of  Man of the year, 1997 on Dr.J.C.S.Kataky,
   Scientist, Regional Research Laboratory, Jorhat.
   

11 PARIJAT BAGS 11 GOLDS IN ASSAM AQUATIC MEET	         [AT:10-JUN-97]
   -------------------------------------------
   
   Ms Parijat Choudhury, a student of Holy Child School, Guwahati bagged
   11 gold medals in the recently concluded 7th all-Assam  aquatic  meet
   held at the Bimala Prasad Chaliha Swimming Pool in Guwahati.  Parijat
   was also adjudged the group champion in the girls group-III.
