1  BOMB EXPLOSIONS IN BONGAIGAON, TEAOK, GOLAGHAT
   ----------------------------------------------
  
   According to All India Radio local news, in two  separate  incidents,
   powerful explosions damaged pipeline carrying crude oil, belonging to
   the  OIL  in Bongaigaon,  and Singhijan near Teaok in Jorhat district
   last night.  Firefighters were rushed to the area  in  Bongaigaon  to
   control the  fire.  Another, report said that an explosion took place
   in the OIL  pipeline  at  Badulipara  near  Golaghat.    Details  are
   awaited.
   

2  ROAD, RAIL AND OIL BLOCKADE BY ULFA		          [AT:27-NOV-97]
   -----------------------------------
   
   The  ULFA  on  November  26  clarified that its 18-hour road-cum-rail
   blockade call on November 28 would also include blockade of  flow  of
   oil  from  the State, the rebel outfit's publicity secretary Mithinga
   Daimari said. In a  FAX  message,  Daimari  said  that  the  blockade
   starting from 6 am to 12 midnight would cover all forms of transport.
   
   Normal life was hit by the ULFA blockade at Golaghat on November  28.
   Public transport  and private vehicles kept off the road.  Only a few
   two-wheelers, government vehicles,  cycles  and  rickshaw  were  seen
   plying.  Attendance  in offices were thin.  Businesses remained open.
   Guwahati-based newspapers did not reach Golaghat due to the blockade.

3  CENTRE APPROVES ACTION PLAN TO CONTAIN VIOLENCE	  [AT:27-NOV-97]
   -----------------------------------------------
  
   In a new development, the Centre has formulated a new proposal called
   Assam  Action  Plan, to contain the escalating violence in the State.
   The plan has already been approved by the State Government,  revealed
   the  Union  Minister  of  State for Home, Maqbool Dar at New Delhi on
   November 26.

4  ABSU FIRM ON BODOLAND				   [S:27-NOV-97]
   ---------------------
   
   Almost all the activists of the Bodo militant  outfits  would  abjure
   violence  and  come  to the 'national mainstream' if they achieve the
   goal of a separate Bodoland State, the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU)
   president,  Mr  Urkhao  Gwara  Brahma  said  on  November  26,  while
   asserting  that  the student body was hell-bent to go on fighting for
   the creation of the separate Bodoland.
   
   Mr Brahma justified the proposal for creation of Bodoland, 'which has
   satisfied  all  criteria  for  a  separate  State.'  It  comprised  a
   continuous  area starting from Sankosh river on the west to Sadiya on
   the east, which comprise a Bodo population of 70 per cent.  Moreover,
   the non-Bodo communities of the area had  also  joined  the  ABSU  in
   demanding creation of a separate State, Mr Brahma claimed.
   

5  ABDUCTED OFFICIAL RESCUED				   [S:27-NOV-97]
   -------------------------
   
   In  a  major  breakthrough, the police rescued the abducted assistant
   general manager of the Necem Cement  Ltd,  Mr  Ramesh  Kumar  from  a
   hideout  of  the  Bodo  Volunteers  Force (BVF) at Ganeshpathar under
   Howeraghat police station in Karbi Anglong district in the wee  hours
   of November  26,  the  Karbi  Anglong SP, Mr Mukesh Agarwal said.  Mr
   Kumar was rescued without any resistance from a house of one  Subhash
   Brahma.   Mr  Kumar had been abducted by the suspected BVF activities
   from his factory premise at Umrangsho in North Cachar Hills  district
   on September 13.
   

6  FORMER SP A WANTED FUGITIVE				   [S:27-NOV-97]
   ---------------------------
   
   The Government of Assam has flashed notices in the  newspapers  in  a
   bid  to  obtain  information  about  the  whereabouts  of  the former
   Superintendent of Police, Golaghat, Raghabendra Awasthi.  Mr Awasthi,
   an IPS officer, is charged with the involvement of kidnapping, murder
   and causing of disappearance of  the  body  of  one  Jyoti  Lohar  in
   Golaghat.
   
   The  investigation  by  the  CID  has  revealed  that  Mr Awasthi was
   involved in the gruesome murder of the  victim.    He  is  absconding
   since June   17,  1997  to  avoid  arrest.    Information  about  the
   whereabouts of Mr Awasthi may be sent by the quickest possible  means
   to  the  Superintendent  of  Police,  Guwahati 781006, or by phone on
   (+91-361) 562935, 566682, 563057, 566740, the notice said.
   

7  CO-OP TO TAKE BACK BARUABAMUNGAON SUGAR MILL 	   [S:26-NOV-97]
   --------------------------------------------
   
   The  Cooperative  Department  of  the  State  Government has recently
   decided to sell 21,000 quintal of sugar and wine available in  excess
   in  the  Baruabamungaon sugar mill. On the other hand, a newly-formed
   regional panel meet on November 25 decided to repeal the  lease  pact
   of  the  sugar  mill and bring it back to the cooperative sector.

8  GOLDEN JUBILEE EXHIBITION ON WHEELS 			   [S:26-NOV-97]
   -----------------------------------
   
   The Golden Jubilee 'Exhibition on Wheel' organized by the  Government
   of  India  with  active  cooperation  from different departments will
   arrive at Guwahati on November 28, after traversing through different
   parts of the country since its flagging off at Porbandar on  November
   16.   The  Ministry of Railways has played a major role in organizing
   this unique exhibition encased in ten bogies named after  rivers  and
   mountains of the country.  The exhibition will depict the country and
   its progress through models and displays.
   

9  STUDENT FROM ASSAM SHINES				   [S:26-NOV-97]
   -------------------------
   
   Rathin  Chaudhury,  a  brilliant  student  from Assam, has earned the
   distinction of standing first in the higher secondary examinations in
   England and getting a direct  admission  into  Cambridge  University.
   Rathin is the first Indian student to achieve this honour in the GCSE
   (12 standard  exams) of England and North Ireland.  Rathin is the son
   of Dr Girija Sankar Chaudhury and Dr Bijyolakshmi Chaudhury.
   

10 GUWAHATI READY TO HOST WORLD ARMSPORT		  [AT:27-NOV-97]
   -------------------------------------
   
   Brisk  preparations are on to hold the World Armsport Championship at
   the Nehru Stadium in Guwahati from December 3. About 300 participants
   from 28 countries  are  expected   to    participate  in  the  event.
   The congress of the world body will also  be  held  during  the  meet
   where  Bob  O'leary,  president,  World  Armsport Federation, will be
   present. USA will send a 44-member  strong  squad  while  Brazil  and
   Uzbekistan  would  be  represented by 24 and 22 members respectively.
   Russian and England are sending a strong 48-member team each.
   

11 CENTRAL AID TO ASSAM SCHOOL FOR SPORTS		  [AT:26-NOV-97]
   --------------------------------------
   
   Nanoi Higher Secondary School in Nagaon  district  became  the  first
   Assam  school  to be brought under the centrally-sponsored scheme for
   development  of  sports  infrastructure  in  rural  area.  Under  the
   Government  of  India  scheme,  the  school  received  an  amount  of
   Rs.91,000.  The  cheque  was  formally  handed  over  to  the  school
   authority by the State Sports director on November 25.
