1 GUWAHATI JAIL A VERITABLE WONDERLAND [S:31-MAR-99]
   ------------------------------------
GUWAHATI: The Guwahati district jail has become a veritable
`wonderland' if the variety of the criminals, including the
extremists of the Northeast lodged there, and the ramshackle units
and the activities of the jail inmates are anything to go by.

While the entire infrastructure and the houses are of
pre-Independence vintage, the inmates who include militants from
outfits like ULFA, NDFB, BLT, NSCN, host of militant outfits from
Manipur and Tripura, besides condemned criminals, carry out their
activities as if the jail is their own property.

The militants have smeared the walls of their cells with slogans
and demands of their respective outfits. The NDFB and ULFA
militants often enter into heated exchanges over their demands,
while the BLT inmates will scrupulously avoid the ULFA inmates.

Very often the jail staff face tough times pacifying the militants
engaged in wordy duels and preventing it from turning into physical
fights. On the other hand the Manipur extremists have set up
full-fledged homesteads plots to rear poultry.

The militants also get a steady supply of their needs like
cigarette, eatables etc from outside. Each of the NSCN inmate has
an attendant to do their petty personnel chores for them. The jail
staff also treat the militants in a different manner from the other
criminals. Meanwhile, the ULFA inmates have started to prepare for
their foundation day on April 7.

It is only during the monsoons, when almost the entire premises
remain submerged under knee-deep water that the activities of the
inmates witness a slump. It is during these times that the
pitiable plight of the jail becomes most manifest, sources said.

educational institutions throughout the State, and demanded that
the State Government take up the matter with the concerned
authorities for effective steps. The MLAs alleged that the Army

   ---------------------------------------
BOKAKHAT: The examinees of the various board and university
examinations in Bokakhat town were disturbed because of a big fair
that started at the Sri Sri Satya Narayan Mandir during the Hanuman
Jayanti from March 31 to April 4.

The Hanuman Jayanti celebration committee allowed a commercial
party from outside Assam to hold a big fare during the examination
season, least bothering about the disturbance it could cause to the
   candidates in the examination halls.

The hustle and bustle along with blaring music during the day and
evening hours had upset the peaceful atmosphere of the examination
centres which is essential for the candidates to appear in the
   examinations.
